A Taste of What Is Next: Heron’s Key Expansion Wednesday September 24th

Expanding the World Through Virtual Reality at Emerald Heights

On a recent afternoon at Emerald Heights, a small group of residents gathered to try something many had never experienced before. Within moments of putting on a virtual reality headset, they found themselves transported into the middle of one of Seattle’s most memorable celebrations: the Seahawks Super Bowl parade.

As the excitement of the parade unfolded around them, residents waved at onlookers, spotted cheerleaders and players, and joined fellow fans in cheering along with the sea of “12s.”

The immersive experience recreates the energy of the historic parade and places viewers right in the middle of the cheering crowd. You can see a glimpse of the experience in this recent feature from KING5.

What began as a fun introduction to new technology quickly sparked a bigger conversation about possibility, connection, and how innovation can expand the way residents experience the world.

“This technology would be my escape into nature, into real life that I physically can’t access anymore. I got excited about that prospect, knowing experiences like this are possible.”

– Emerald Heights Resident

Virtual Reality Designed to Support Connection

The experience was made possible through Emerald Heights’ partnership with Rendever, which delivers immersive technology designed to support longer, healthier, and more connected lives.

With Rendever, residents simply put on a headset and are transported into shared experiences they can explore together. They can travel to destinations around the world, revisit meaningful places from their past, or experience moments like the Seahawks parade as if they were standing right in the crowd.

The platform was designed specifically for older adults and those who support them. Its shared format encourages conversation, connection, and engagement, helping address one of the most important challenges facing older adults today: social isolation.

Research-backed immersive experiences have also shown promise for individuals experiencing mobility limitations, vision challenges, or cognitive decline.

Technology with Purpose

For the team at Emerald Heights, virtual reality is not simply about introducing new technology. It is about thoughtfully expanding the ways residents can stay engaged with the world around them.

Nicole McCarthy, Director of Resident Services, says the community is energized by the possibilities immersive technology is creating.

“We are incredibly excited about our partnership with Rendever and what it makes possible for residents,” McCarthy shared. “It’s one of several innovative approaches we are exploring as an intervention for mild cognitive impairment and early dementia diagnosis. Our goal is always to meet people where they are and create meaningful experiences that support connection, curiosity, and engagement.”

Virtual reality is just one part of Emerald Heights’ broader approach to cognitive wellness. The community continues to explore evidence-based strategies to support residents living with dementia and cognitive changes, including cognitive stimulation therapy and new partnerships focused on therapeutic nature and wellness programming.

McCarthy recalls one particularly powerful moment during a virtual experience when a resident asked to revisit the neighborhood where she grew up.

“She was able to show us the street where she lived and began recalling the names of nearby streets and sharing stories from her childhood,” McCarthy said. “The experience unlocked something for her. Afterward, she became more open with staff and neighbors, and we could see a new level of comfort in her interactions.”

Looking Ahead

At Emerald Heights, innovation is always guided by a simple goal: helping residents continue living vibrant, meaningful lives.

As new technologies continue to emerge, senior living communities are finding thoughtful ways to use them to support connection, curiosity, and well-being. At Emerald Heights, that means continually exploring innovative tools and partnerships that help residents stay engaged with the world around them.

Because living well at every age should include the freedom to keep discovering, learning, and experiencing life in new ways.

Working With a Senior Move Manager: Support for a Smoother Transition

Planning a move later in life often involves more than packing boxes. Downsizing, coordinating services, managing timelines, and deciding what to keep can make even a positive move feel overwhelming.

What many people do not realize is that Senior Move Managers specialize in supporting older adults through this process. They provide guidance, organization, and coordination to help make moving more manageable and less stressful.

What Is a Senior Move Manager?

Senior Move Managers are trained professionals who assist older adults through all phases of a move, from early planning to settling into a new home. According to trusted organizations like AARP, their role focuses on reducing stress while helping individuals stay in control.

Services may include:

  • Creating a personalized move plan and timeline
  • Helping sort, organize, and downsize belongings
  • Coordinating movers, donations, and estate services
  • Packing, unpacking, and setting up the new home

Unlike traditional moving companies, Senior Move Managers often remain involved well beyond moving day.

Why and When to Consider Senior Move Management

Senior Move Managers are trained professionals who assist older adults through all phases of a move, Moves later in life often involve longtime homes, years of belongings, physical considerations, or family members helping from afar. Senior Move Managers help break this transition into manageable steps and can be especially helpful for those who feel unsure where to begin or prefer to move at a comfortable pace.

Many people benefit from connecting with a Senior Move Manager earlier than expected, sometimes months before a move. Early guidance can reduce stress, support clearer decision-making, and lead to a smoother overall experience.

Starting Small With Downsizing

Downsizing does not need to happen all at once. Small, intentional steps can make the process feel far more manageable.

Helpful ways to begin:

  • Start with low-emotion areas like storage spaces or extra closets
  • Consider what your next home needs to support
  • Use simple categories such as keep, donate, gift, sell, or decide later
  • Allow time for reflection rather than rushing decisions

Senior Move Managers are trained to support this process with patience and respect.

Choosing a Senior Move Manager

Because this is a specialized profession, experience and credentials matter. The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (NASMM) offers a national directory of qualified professionals and clear explanations of services.

The Power of Intergenerational Connection at Emerald Heights

Written by Sandra Cook, VP of Marketing at Emerald Communities

At Emerald Heights, community is more than just proximity — it’s about meaningful connection across generations. Our campus has long welcomed outstanding high school and college students through part-time jobs, volunteer roles, and cultural partnerships. What emerges is far more than employment or experience — it’s a powerful, human exchange that enriches both our residents and the next generation.

Just recently, my own high schooler joined the culinary team at Emerald Heights. As an introvert, she has always preferred being quietly in the background. But working alongside our residents has changed her in the most unexpected and meaningful ways. The wisdom and warmth of the older adults she serves have become the gentle push she needed — helping her grow her confidence, expand her aspirations, and come out of her shell. She now looks forward to hearing their stories, asking thoughtful questions, and building real connections that go far beyond a job.

For students like her, Emerald Heights becomes a classroom of life. They learn conversation beyond a screen. They hear real stories of resilience, career adventures, world travel, civic engagement, and family legacy. Many say their confidence, empathy, and communication skills improve dramatically within just a few months of working here.

For our residents, the energy is contagious. They light up when they hear about college acceptances, robotics competitions, orchestra performances, and entrepreneurship projects. Residents often become mentors, cheerleaders — even unofficial grandparents. And in return, they feel a renewed sense of purpose — sharing knowledge, encouraging big dreams, and staying active not just physically, but socially and intellectually.

At Emerald Heights, we believe the best communities don’t separate generations — they bring them together. And every day on our campus, we see proof that when wisdom meets curiosity, everyone thrives.

Understanding the Differences Between Types of Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)

As you or your loved ones begin exploring retirement living options, one important concept to understand is the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)—also known as a Life Plan Community. These communities are designed to support older adults as they age, offering peace of mind, lifelong care, and vibrant living on a single campus.

But not all CCRCs are created equal.

There are three primary types of contracts offered by CCRCs: Type A (Life Care), Type B (Modified), and Type C (Fee-for-Service). At Emerald Heights in Redmond and Heron’s Key in Gig Harbor, we offer Type A Life Care contracts, the most comprehensive and predictable option.

Let’s explore the differences between each contract type so you can make an informed choice for your future.

Type A: Life Care (Offered at Emerald Heights and Heron’s Key)

What is it?
Type A is the most all-inclusive CCRC contract. Residents pay a one-time entrance fee and a consistent monthly service fee that covers most future health care needs—no matter how those needs change.

Key Benefits of Type A:

  • Predictable Costs: Your monthly service fee remains stable even if you transition to assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing.
  • Onsite Care: Seamless access to all levels of care without leaving your community.
  • Tax Advantages: A portion (about 30–36%) of your entrance fee may be deductible as a prepaid medical expense.*
  • Low Second Occupant Fees: Great for couples—even if each requires a different level of care.
  • Lifelong Security: You’ll never be asked to leave due to rising healthcare costs.

Type A Life Plan Communities like Emerald Heights and Heron’s Key are ideal for those seeking long-term financial protection and a plan for the future.

Type B: Modified Plan

What is it?
Type B contracts offer some of the benefits of Type A but with limits. You may receive a discounted rate for a defined period if you need care—but once that period ends, you’ll pay market rates.

Considerations:

  • Lower entrance fees than Type A.
  • Limited or discounted healthcare included.
  • Couples may incur separate full fees if they need different levels of care.
  • Health services may be offsite.
  • Refundable entrance fees may be available—but are often contingent on resale of the residence.

This model may appeal to individuals seeking lower up-front costs but still want a degree of protection.

Type C: Fee-for-Service

What is it?
Type C is the most flexible—and potentially riskiest—option. You’ll pay a lower entrance fee and monthly service fee while living independently, but when care is needed, you’ll pay full market rates for assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing.

Best For:

  • Individuals confident in covering future healthcare expenses out-of-pocket.
  • Those with robust long-term care insurance.

While the initial costs are lower, future care could become significantly more expensive.

Choosing the Right Life Plan Community in Washington State

In Washington, roughly:

  • 1/3 of CCRCs offer Type A Life Care contracts.
  • 1/4 offer Type B.
  • The rest are Type C Fee-for-Service models.

If peace of mind, cost predictability, and onsite access to multiple levels of care matter most to you, a Type A community like Emerald Heights or Heron’s Key may be your best fit.
