Expanding the World Through Virtual Reality at Emerald Heights

On a recent afternoon at Emerald Heights, a small group of residents gathered to try something many had never experienced before. Within moments of putting on a virtual reality headset, they found themselves transported into the middle of one of Seattle’s most memorable celebrations: the Seahawks Super Bowl parade.

As the excitement of the parade unfolded around them, residents waved at onlookers, spotted cheerleaders and players, and joined fellow fans in cheering along with the sea of “12s.”

The immersive experience recreates the energy of the historic parade and places viewers right in the middle of the cheering crowd. You can see a glimpse of the experience in this recent feature from KING5.

What began as a fun introduction to new technology quickly sparked a bigger conversation about possibility, connection, and how innovation can expand the way residents experience the world.

“This technology would be my escape into nature, into real life that I physically can’t access anymore. I got excited about that prospect, knowing experiences like this are possible.”

– Emerald Heights Resident

Virtual Reality Designed to Support Connection

The experience was made possible through Emerald Heights’ partnership with Rendever, which delivers immersive technology designed to support longer, healthier, and more connected lives.

With Rendever, residents simply put on a headset and are transported into shared experiences they can explore together. They can travel to destinations around the world, revisit meaningful places from their past, or experience moments like the Seahawks parade as if they were standing right in the crowd.

The platform was designed specifically for older adults and those who support them. Its shared format encourages conversation, connection, and engagement, helping address one of the most important challenges facing older adults today: social isolation.

Research-backed immersive experiences have also shown promise for individuals experiencing mobility limitations, vision challenges, or cognitive decline.

Technology with Purpose

For the team at Emerald Heights, virtual reality is not simply about introducing new technology. It is about thoughtfully expanding the ways residents can stay engaged with the world around them.

Nicole McCarthy, Director of Resident Services, says the community is energized by the possibilities immersive technology is creating.

“We are incredibly excited about our partnership with Rendever and what it makes possible for residents,” McCarthy shared. “It’s one of several innovative approaches we are exploring as an intervention for mild cognitive impairment and early dementia diagnosis. Our goal is always to meet people where they are and create meaningful experiences that support connection, curiosity, and engagement.”

Virtual reality is just one part of Emerald Heights’ broader approach to cognitive wellness. The community continues to explore evidence-based strategies to support residents living with dementia and cognitive changes, including cognitive stimulation therapy and new partnerships focused on therapeutic nature and wellness programming.

McCarthy recalls one particularly powerful moment during a virtual experience when a resident asked to revisit the neighborhood where she grew up.

“She was able to show us the street where she lived and began recalling the names of nearby streets and sharing stories from her childhood,” McCarthy said. “The experience unlocked something for her. Afterward, she became more open with staff and neighbors, and we could see a new level of comfort in her interactions.”

Looking Ahead

At Emerald Heights, innovation is always guided by a simple goal: helping residents continue living vibrant, meaningful lives.

As new technologies continue to emerge, senior living communities are finding thoughtful ways to use them to support connection, curiosity, and well-being. At Emerald Heights, that means continually exploring innovative tools and partnerships that help residents stay engaged with the world around them.

Because living well at every age should include the freedom to keep discovering, learning, and experiencing life in new ways.

Working With a Senior Move Manager: Support for a Smoother Transition

Planning a move later in life often involves more than packing boxes. Downsizing, coordinating services, managing timelines, and deciding what to keep can make even a positive move feel overwhelming.

What many people do not realize is that Senior Move Managers specialize in supporting older adults through this process. They provide guidance, organization, and coordination to help make moving more manageable and less stressful.

What Is a Senior Move Manager?

Senior Move Managers are trained professionals who assist older adults through all phases of a move, from early planning to settling into a new home. According to trusted organizations like AARP, their role focuses on reducing stress while helping individuals stay in control.

Services may include:

  • Creating a personalized move plan and timeline
  • Helping sort, organize, and downsize belongings
  • Coordinating movers, donations, and estate services
  • Packing, unpacking, and setting up the new home

Unlike traditional moving companies, Senior Move Managers often remain involved well beyond moving day.

Why and When to Consider Senior Move Management

Senior Move Managers are trained professionals who assist older adults through all phases of a move, Moves later in life often involve longtime homes, years of belongings, physical considerations, or family members helping from afar. Senior Move Managers help break this transition into manageable steps and can be especially helpful for those who feel unsure where to begin or prefer to move at a comfortable pace.

Many people benefit from connecting with a Senior Move Manager earlier than expected, sometimes months before a move. Early guidance can reduce stress, support clearer decision-making, and lead to a smoother overall experience.

Starting Small With Downsizing

Downsizing does not need to happen all at once. Small, intentional steps can make the process feel far more manageable.

Helpful ways to begin:

  • Start with low-emotion areas like storage spaces or extra closets
  • Consider what your next home needs to support
  • Use simple categories such as keep, donate, gift, sell, or decide later
  • Allow time for reflection rather than rushing decisions

Senior Move Managers are trained to support this process with patience and respect.

Choosing a Senior Move Manager

Because this is a specialized profession, experience and credentials matter. The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (NASMM) offers a national directory of qualified professionals and clear explanations of services.

A New Year. A Smarter Plan for Your Future at Emerald Heights

As we begin 2026, a new year brings fresh opportunities to reflect, plan ahead, and invest in what matters most. For many, exploring a Life Plan Community is not just about making a move. It is about choosing stability, connection, and confidence in the years ahead.

At Emerald Heights, we believe thoughtful planning begins with clear information, open dialogue, and a long-term perspective.

Look Forward with Insight

As you consider your plans for the future, having the right tools and information can make all the difference. Resources like our Financial Assessment Tool are designed to help you reevaluate financial qualifications and explore which apartment floorplans may be the best fit for your needs. Our 2026 rates, now published, provide another important piece of the planning picture.

In 2026, Emerald Heights continues to offer multiple contract options, allowing prospective residents to choose the plan that best aligns with their financial goals and personal priorities. Our entrance fee structure remains competitive among Type A Life Plan Communities, while continuing to deliver long-term value through predictable costs, comprehensive services, and access to care.

Monthly service fee adjustments remain measured and consistent, supporting the ongoing strength of our community while preserving the financial predictability residents value. This thoughtful approach allows Emerald Heights to balance affordability, choice, and sustainability, ensuring we remain a strong nonprofit community for both current and future residents.

To provide helpful context, the charts below illustrate long-term trends in both entrance fees and monthly service fees at Emerald Heights.

History of Emerald Heights Entrance Fee Increases (2017–2026)

Entrance fees at Emerald Heights have increased an average of 4.4% annually since 2017, reflecting long-term planning and financial stewardship across varying economic conditions.

History of Emerald Heights Monthly Service Fee Increases (2017–2026)

Monthly service fees have increased an average of 4.7% annually since 2017, with second-person rates closely aligned to support shared services and community operations.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

Together, these trends highlight one of the key benefits of a Life Plan Community: pricing transparency and long-term predictability. While annual increases may fluctuate based on economic factors, Emerald Heights takes a measured, forward-looking approach that balances today’s realities with tomorrow’s needs.

As a nonprofit organization, Emerald Heights reinvests revenue directly back into the community. This supports campus improvements, resident services, and the long-term strength of our mission, helping ensure Emerald Heights remains a welcoming, thriving place to call home for generations to come.

Making Informed Decisions and Taking Action

Choosing where to spend your future years is a significant decision, and one that deserves time and careful consideration. Beyond reviewing rates, proactive steps can help you remain informed and well-positioned:

  • Joining the waitlist allows you to stay connected and expand your opportunities as availability changes
  • Remaining open to a range of floorplans can increase flexibility and reduce wait times
  • Staying in regular contact with our team ensures you have the most up-to-date information as you plan

With more older adults exploring senior living options and limited new supply coming online, planning ahead has never been more important. Life Plan Communities offer a distinct advantage by allowing residents to move in as independent individuals following a health assessment process, rather than waiting for a health event or urgent care need.

The Power of Intergenerational Connection at Emerald Heights

Written by Sandra Cook, VP of Marketing at Emerald Communities

At Emerald Heights, community is more than just proximity — it’s about meaningful connection across generations. Our campus has long welcomed outstanding high school and college students through part-time jobs, volunteer roles, and cultural partnerships. What emerges is far more than employment or experience — it’s a powerful, human exchange that enriches both our residents and the next generation.

Just recently, my own high schooler joined the culinary team at Emerald Heights. As an introvert, she has always preferred being quietly in the background. But working alongside our residents has changed her in the most unexpected and meaningful ways. The wisdom and warmth of the older adults she serves have become the gentle push she needed — helping her grow her confidence, expand her aspirations, and come out of her shell. She now looks forward to hearing their stories, asking thoughtful questions, and building real connections that go far beyond a job.

For students like her, Emerald Heights becomes a classroom of life. They learn conversation beyond a screen. They hear real stories of resilience, career adventures, world travel, civic engagement, and family legacy. Many say their confidence, empathy, and communication skills improve dramatically within just a few months of working here.

For our residents, the energy is contagious. They light up when they hear about college acceptances, robotics competitions, orchestra performances, and entrepreneurship projects. Residents often become mentors, cheerleaders — even unofficial grandparents. And in return, they feel a renewed sense of purpose — sharing knowledge, encouraging big dreams, and staying active not just physically, but socially and intellectually.

At Emerald Heights, we believe the best communities don’t separate generations — they bring them together. And every day on our campus, we see proof that when wisdom meets curiosity, everyone thrives.

Understanding The Rise of Solo Agers

solo ager

As the landscape of aging in America evolves, a significant demographic shift is emerging: the rise of solo agers. These are individuals navigating their later years without the traditional support of immediate family, such as a spouse or children. This trend presents both challenges and opportunities, prompting innovative housing solutions and community models that cater to their unique needs.

Solo agers are becoming an increasingly prominent segment of the aging population. Approximately 22 million older adults in the U.S. live alone, with nearly 30% of them lacking children or familial support as they age. Among baby boomers, over 30% are solo agers, often due to factors like childlessness, divorce, or estrangement. 1 2

This shift is influenced by several factors:

  • Changing Family Structures: The rate of childlessness among baby boomers is close to 20%, doubling that of previous generations. 3
  • Increased Longevity: With people living longer, the likelihood of outliving spouses or siblings increases, leading to more individuals aging alone.
  • Geographical Mobility: Modern families often live spread out geographically, making it challenging for older adults to rely on nearby family support. 4

Housing Solutions for Solo Agers:

The rise of solo agers has spurred interest in alternative housing arrangements that promote independence while providing necessary support:

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

Many in the “sandwich generation” are turning to ADUs—secondary housing units on a single-family property—to accommodate aging parents or adult children. This setup allows for proximity while maintaining privacy, offering a practical solution for multigenerational living.

Intergenerational Living

Communities that blend different age groups can provide mutual benefits: older adults gain companionship and assistance, while younger residents benefit from mentorship and shared experiences. Such arrangements can alleviate feelings of isolation among solo agers.

Life Plan Communities

Also known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), these offer a continuum of care—from independent living to assisted living and skilled nursing—within one campus. Facilities like Emerald Heights provide solo agers with a supportive environment that adapts to their changing needs, ensuring peace of mind and community engagement.

The Role of Emerald Heights

Emerald Heights stands out as a premier Life Plan Community catering to the needs of solo agers. By offering independent living options alongside on-site healthcare services, residents can age in place without the stress of relocating as their needs evolve. The community fosters social connections through various activities and programs, ensuring that residents remain engaged and active. 2

Planning for a Secure Future

For solo agers, proactive planning is crucial:

  • Legal Preparations: Establishing advance directives and powers of attorney ensures that their healthcare and financial wishes are respected. 4
  • Building Support Networks: Engaging with community groups, neighbors, and professional services can create a reliable support system. 4
  • Financial Planning: Working with financial advisors can help solo agers manage their resources effectively, ensuring long-term security.

As the number of solo agers continues to grow, embracing innovative housing solutions and proactive planning becomes essential. Communities like Emerald Heights offer a blueprint for supportive, engaging environments where solo agers can thrive with dignity and independence.
